What is cow-based organic farming?

Cow- based organic farming is one of the traditional Indian farming styles that revolves around the usage of all cow-based products. It is a complete, sustainable, and natural system that derives its nutrients, pest control, and produce from cow products while retaining soil fertility. The basic farming prerequisites like fertilizer, pesticides are made organically in following ways:

Insect Controller: All we need is shade, cow urine & medicinal leaves. Cow Based Insect Controller is completely natural and does not have any hazardous chemical substances.

Vermi Compost: All we need is an Indian cow, earthworms, water and a trench in shadow. Vermi-compost is produced by mixing cow dung, cow urine & farm waste in the trench and then let the earthworms relish on it.

Fertilizer : All we need is cow dung, cow urine & jaggery. ·This fertilizer not only boosts plant growth but it also maintains the soil balance. Entire in-soil food chain can be fed with this fertilizer thus improving soil health.

Why is there so much stress on ‘Desi cow’?

‘Desi Cow’ or ‘A2 cow’ is the indigenous variety of cow found in India. It is distinguished by a hump on the back and loose folds of skin near the neck. The Indian cow has an intestine that’s unique in the animal world. Also, its hump naturally equips it to pump more Vit D in her milk. The milk is also rich in antioxidants, Vit B12, amino acids (building blocks of protein), good carbs and essential fatty acids. https://www.outlookindia.com/magazine/story/nobody-beats-indian-cows/291619 The different cow products and their benefits are elaborated further:

COW MILK Desi Cow milk is A2 Type milk that helps fight diabetes in infants and adults. Many more products like curd, buttermilk, butter & clear butter (Ghee) are made from cow milk. These products have high medicinal & nutritional values.

COW URINE: Cow urine is used to produce organic & natural fertilizers, insect repellents and other products in farming. It is not just used for external purposes alone but highly beneficial if consumed by humans. It has high medicinal value and is considered as a super medicine.

COW DUNG : Dung or Gobar - as called in Hindi has high micro-organismic value. This is helpful to increase fertility and productivity of soil. Cow Dung Compost is a natural fertilizer and many other organic fertilizers can be made from cow dung.

PANCHAGAVYA : Milk, curd, go ghrut(Ghee), gomutra, gomay form a Holi union of panchagavya ayurvedic medicine. These when mixed in different measures and with different other components form a range of medicines. These medicines have proven to be effective to address a lot of medical problems.

Why the product cost is more than same product available in market?

Organic products as such are expensive due to many reasons such as higher production cost due to greater labor input, lack of economy of scale, post-harvest losses, inefficient logistics due to less volume and cost of organic certification. Though, Goujata products are not formally organic certified, our farmers also go through the same production process. Hence, the products are costly.

From where do the product collected?

The founders of Goujata are personally connected to many small scale farmers and ashrams engaged in cow based farming. We collect products from these known sources.

Do you have organic certification?

As of now, no. The shift towards chemical-free produce comes at a price. Organic farming certification in India costs 25,000-40,000 INR for 3 years and this is exclusive of detailed laboratory analysis for the different products. Also, one of the major factors for getting the certification is use of farmland that has been free of chemicals for three or more years. This makes the task daunting and out of reach for small scale farmers who do not have enough income to make their ends meet, let alone go for organic certification. It is therefore, not feasible for a farmer to dive into this without a head start. We intend to provide that head start to the farmers who are interested in turning around their way of farming. Once the soil has the time to replenish due to cow-based farming activities and is free of chemicals, and the farmers are assured that organic farming is indeed, quite profitable, we will encourage them to go for organic certification and provide them the required resources to do so.
